What Is The Best Chromebox And What Do The Specs Mean?

If you’re looking for a good Chromebox I’m sure you’ve noticed that there are more and more options out there weekly. They are growing in popularity due to their incredible performance, small size, and great prices. But some of the specs can get confusing, especially when it comes to the processor. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Processor: Many Chromeboxes these days have a dual-core Intel Celeron (Haswell) 2995U or 2957U processor. They are more than capable of handling pretty much everything you can throw at them. However, if you’re one of those people who has 50+ tabs open at one time, you might want to consider the Intel Core i3 processor. Intel Core i3 models are usually less than $50 more but could be worth it if you are a huge multi-tasker. There are even Intel Core i5 models available but I honestly couldn’t tell the difference, i3 was more than enough for everything I could throw at it.

RAM: The cheaper Chrome box models come with 2GB RAM and the mid range models usually have 4GB RAM. The difference in 2GB vs 4GB was noticeable to me, especially with video. I loaded up a few YouTube videos at once and noticed a smoother video and just smoother overall performance with 4GB. The 2GB versions wasn’t necessarily slower, it just wasn’t as smooth as the 4GB versions. So for schoolwork and general browsing, 2GB is more than enough. If you watch a lot of Netflix or like to have everything open at once, 4GB is the way to go. Although I haven’t personally tried 8GB, from what I hear it’s just like the Core i5 processor, overkill.

Another option you have is to buy RAM and upgrade it yourself. The 4GB upgrade is just $20 and the 8GB(if you think you need it) upgrade is just $35. Buy it HERE.

So what is the best Chromebox for the money? I have a Core i3 Chromebox with 4GB RAM and I’ve never been able to get it to the point where it slowed down or froze on me. I considered more expensive models with Intel Core i5 or 8GB RAM but I’m glad I didn’t waste my money. So my answer is ASUS CHROMEBOX-M075U. I got it for about $200 on sale but even if I bought it for $300 it would still be a smoking deal. I was actually saving up for a desktop computer at the time and was going to spend nearly $1,000 on one. Instead I bought the ASUS CHROMEBOX-M075U and two 24″ monitors for less than $500. This ASUS model comes with Intel Core i3, 4GB RAM, and a wireless Chrome keyboard and mouse. I didn’t like the keyboard/mouse combo so I sold it for $40 on eBay. If you don’t want to spend that much money, you can always get the ASUS CHROMEBOX-M004Ufor about $160 and upgrade the RAM later on if you need to.
